Alterra Mountain Company just announced the Ikon Pass, a $899 ticket to ride at 26 winter destinations across nine states and four Canadian provinces. Unlimited skiing/riding is included at twelve of these resorts, including Steamboat. Six other resorts are included at seven days each, and another seven days are include at a combination of seven additional resorts.
Consider this…the retail price of an 8 day pass at Steamboat this winter during peak season is just over $1000. Next year if you plan on visiting Steamboat, you can purchase an Ikon Pass for $100 less and ski as many days as you want. And then you can ski as many days as you want at Winter Park, Squaw Valley, Mammoth Mountain and eight other resorts. And then you can ski a full week at Big Sky, another full week at Jackson Hole, and full weeks at four other destinations. And then you can have another seven days combined at Alta, Snowbird, Sunday River, Loon, Sugarloaf, and SkiBig3 in Alberta, Canada. Are you kidding me! You can ski/ride everyday of next winter across 26 awesome resorts for less than what you paid to ski 8 days at Steamboat this season. WOW!!!!
The Ikon Pass is a direct answer to Vail’s previously unrivaled Epic Pass and opens the door to a season pass war that may drive prices down even further in years to come.
This is also good news for Steamboat locals who are used to paying $1149 or more for their season passes. We can save a bit and take a few weekends at some other resorts on the list. There will be no senior discounts offered for the Ikon Pass, but there will be military and college discounts available…they just haven’t been announced yet. Prices have not been released yet for a Steamboat-only season pass.

Alterra Mountain Company was formed last year when the family that owns Aspen Skiing Co. joined forces with KSL Capital Partners to acquire 12 ski resorts. The purchase included Intrawest, Mammoth Resorts and Deer Valley. Alterra Mountain Company’s twelve destinations are Steamboat, Winter Park Resort, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain, Big Bear Mountain Resort, Stratton, Snowshoe, Deer Valley Resort, Tremblant, Blue Mountain, and CMH Heli Skiing & Summer Adventures. Aspen Skiing Co. will continue operating the four Aspen Resorts – Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. Alterra has partnered with the owners and operators of the various other resorts included on the Ikon Pass.
